The Falmouth Pet Center, serving the upper Cape Cod area since 1989, specializes in holistic and organic dog and cat foods, in large-breed puppy foods and in other specialty diets.
Located in Falmouth, Falmouth Pet Center is a full-service pet store also specializing in reptiles, freshwater fish, saltwater fish, small animals and hand-fed baby birds.
Owner Doug Lefebvre founded the store in 1989, and it has been locally owned and operated ever since.
The company’s website allows customers to shop by pet–dog, cat, small pet—or by brand—with 48 options.
The brands include ZIWI, from the company based in New Zealand, which combines the nutrition of a raw diet with the convenience of ready-serve dry food, the results of a ready-to-serve pet food with no fillers, binders or artificial additives. The ingredients are air-dried, with no sugars or glycerines added. Meat used in the recipes are from animals raised on free-range farms, raised without added hormones of growth promotion.
Pet wellness options include a range of vitamins and supplements, digestive health aids, and healthcare options such as ear cleansers and supplements for hips and joints and for calming. A range of treats are offered as well.
Falmouth Pet Center connects with the community. For example, its Facebook page posted a photo of a bird under the headline “Found Pet” that was picked up by a police officer in the area with a phone number to call to have the bird returned.
Recently, a bearded dragon lizard was found in the middle of the street, so Falmouth Pet Center took the animal in to nurse it back to health. “We try to find the best home possible. We have a pretty big following for bearded dragons here,” said Misty Giles, store manager. The desert creatures usually grow to 10 or 11 inches long. “There was no chance it was going to survive outside,” she said.
Dogs continue to be popular, even after more people are going back to work in the office following the worst of the pandemic. And Falmouth Pet Center is one of only two aquatic pet stores left on the Cape, Ms. Giles said, noting, “We sell freshwater fish and all the supplies.”
